Creating a Fake Accent Wall

I knew I wanted something big to go on the wall behind the futon (in my office) and knew wall art could get pricey. That's when I came up with the idea of letters:

Pinned Image

Greg cut the letters at work and I spray painted them white. It was just what the wall needed. It was a focal point without being too much and represented both of us.

My friend Laura loved the letters and wanted a set for her house. We made them for her and her husband as part of their wedding gift, but they have since moved. They are currently in a rental house and don't want to go crazy painting all the walls.

How can we make them pop without having to paint the walls? Enter the fake accent 'wall':

Greg cut a piece of wood to size based on the size of the letters and spacing. I painted it a nice navy color to coordinate with their bedroom. We touched up the letters and gave them a little more paint to make them look crisp.

Once everything was dry, Greg secured the letters by screwing them in from the back of the wood. We ended up with this:

What a perfect way to make something pop without having to paint a whole wall. You can unscrew the letters and paint it a different color to switch things up. You could also cover the wood in fabric for a fun accent.  There are multiple options you could do in an apartment or rental without creating a lot of work for yourself.

  1. How do you hang the fake wall onto the real wall without messing it up? I live in an apartment and I am limited to decorating and I want a purple accent wall!
